Five straight Outdoor titles (1997–2001). Pioneered the ‘kelp drift’ evasion technique.

The story

The kelp drift

Ngaio Te Rangimarie grew up diving in the Bay of Plenty. She developed the “kelp drift”: letting wind and current move her across the pool while she barely swam at all, so there was almost no splash for the Marco to hear.

Five in a row

She won five consecutive Outdoor titles (1997–2001), the Outdoor record. Like Ishizuchi, she won a medal in every final she ever swam: 11 finals, 11 medals.

Legacy

Her peak Elo of 1946 is the third highest ever recorded, and the highest of any Outdoor athlete. Every Outdoor finalist now trains some version of the kelp drift.

“Don't fight the water. Let it carry you somewhere quiet.”Ngaio Te Rangimarie
