The story
Arrival
Kaori Ishizuchi came from Kanazawa, where her school pool sat beneath a wooden roof that absorbed sound. She later said she learned the game “in a room that told the truth”. She won a medal in her first Indoor final, and then in every final she ever swam: 11 finals, 11 medals.
Six in a row
Ishizuchi beat Lars-Erik Hovland to win the 1991 Indoor title, then won the next five as well (1991–1996). Her method was stillness: she would hold position for whole chukkas as the Marco, calling rarely, and let evaders give themselves away.
Osaka
The 1994 championship was held in Osaka, and Ishizuchi finished second on the day to Rutger Blauwhoed. Ninety minutes later Blauwhoed was disqualified after ocular review and the title was hers. She never commented on the decision beyond saying: “I would rather have won it in the water.”
Legacy
In 2021, the FIMP 90th Anniversary Panel named Ishizuchi the greatest Marco Polo athlete of all time. Her peak Elo of 1952 is the second highest ever recorded.
