The story
Osaka, 1994
Rutger Blauwhoed posted the highest score in the 1994 Indoor final and was presented with the trophy. Frame-by-frame review of the overhead camera then showed his eyelids separated by about 2.1 mm for 0.36 seconds during the fifth chukka. He was disqualified.
After
Blauwhoed never competed again. He has always said the separation was an involuntary reaction to chlorine. The case led directly to the Blackout Goggle Standard of 1995.
“It was the chlorine. It has always been the chlorine.”Rutger Blauwhoed
