The story
From Hamburg, Germany · Era Indoor · Style The Low Crouch
Four in a row
Lieselotte Achterberg won four consecutive Indoor titles (1983–1986). Her low crouch kept her ears just above the waterline and her body below it, so she could hear everything and be heard by no one.
Hovland
Her reign ended in the 1987 final, when Lars-Erik Hovland beat her into second place. The two met in 6 Indoor championships and their rivalry defined the decade.
“Lars was the only one who could hear me coming.”Lieselotte Achterberg
