Last champion of the unified era (1967) and first-ever Indoor World Champion (1968).

The story

The bridge between eras

Bertrand Pélissou is the only athlete to win the last unified World Championship (1967) and the first Indoor World Championship (1968). He had been runner-up to Grünwaldt in 1963.

Indoors

Pélissou adapted faster than anyone to the reverberant indoor halls, shortening his calls so their echoes would not overlap. Short, clipped calls became the standard Indoor technique, a line that runs through Callum Reidford all the way to Aaron Warburton.

“I won the last of one thing and the first of another. That is my only trick.”Bertrand Pélissou
